Rabbits sometimes called bunnies are mammals of the leporidea family known to have long ears, long hinds and short fluffy tails.
They can appear shy, high spirited, timid, very curious and silly irrespective of sex and breed. Rabbits express affection in distinguishing ways by sitting close to you or climbing your body.
A confined rabbit is not too different from a wild rabbit, as they can live quite happily indoors as long as there is a safe spacious accommodation where they can sleep, use another space as a toilet and be confined when not constantly observed.
A rabbit can live for up to twelve years. The duration of pregnancy in rabbits is 31 days and a doe can birth 1-12 baby rabbits which are called kittens in a single birth. Although it is not advisable, a doe can get pregnant right after giving birth. It is also not advisable to keep a single rabbit confined as he/she will get lonely.
Their hearing is top notch and since their eyes are positioned on the sides of their heads, they can see an almost perfect 360 degrees. Communication between rabbits is done using special secret codes which only they can understand.
Rabbits in the wild mostly spend time digging, running, jumping, hopping, hiding, eating, socializing with other rabbits and sometimes staying alone. To allow a pet rabbit (s) carry out their natural behaviors, it is important to build them a spacious pen, that gives them room to do all that they’d do in their natural habitat.
As for their diet, fresh clean drinking water should be provided and since their digestive system needs hay and grass to to function properly, a healthy supply is important. As a supplement, leafy greens and veggies such as carrots, cucumber, and cabbage can be added.
Rabbits are crepuscular in nature and thus are mostly active at dusk and dawn. They sleep mostly during the day to get prepared for a night full of activity.
Rabbits can jump and hop to impressive heights and distances. They dislike being lifted up and are naturally afraid of anything coming from above.
Rabbits enjoy toys, food based-toys. They also enjoy a spacious environment where they can run, dig, play, socialize and display their natural behaviors away from predators.
To some people, rabbits are a symbol of goodluck and creativity.
