Prof Folasade Ogunsola becomes first female UNILAG VC

Folasade Ogunsola, a Professor of Microbiology, has been appointed as the University of Lagos’ 13th Vice Chancellor (UNILAG) thereby becoming the first female VC of the institution.

Since Lagos University was founded in 1962, no female VC has ever emerged.

Ogunsola will be takeover from Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the outgoing and 12th VC,  whose five-year single term ends on November 11.

Prof Folasade Ogunsola becomes first female UNILAG VC

Those who contested with her for the position included  Professors Abayomi Akinyeye, Department of History, Faculty of Arts, and Mathew Ilori and Adeyinka Adekunle, Departments of Microbiology and Botany, Faculty of Sciences.

Also among them were, Timothy Nubi from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences’ Department of Estate Management; Imran Smith from the Faculty of Law; and Ayo Olowe from the Faculty of Management Sciences’ Department of Finance.

Ogunsola, who was born in 1958, works as a consultant clinical microbiologist and infection control at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

The incoming VC has a PhD in Medical Microbiology, an MSc in Medical Microbiology with Distinction, and a Diploma in Biomedical Techniques from Cardiff’s University of Wales College of Medicine.

She holds memberships in the Royal College of Pathologists, the West African College of Physicians, the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Nigerian Academy of Medicine, and the Academy of Medicine Specialties.

Ogunsola was the acting Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG and the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Development Services.

The professor was the university’s first and only female Provost of the College of Medicine.

She has served on the governing council for three terms, making her the only person with that many years on the body.

Ogunsola has received numerous local and international awards, has 142 publications, and has co-authored four books.

So far, the illustrious don has supervised or co-supervised eight doctoral students and 61 master’s students.
