Last missionary priest in Makurdi diocese dies at age 90

Reverend Father Michael Murphy, CSSp, the last priest among the early missionaries in the Makurdi Diocese, has died at the age of 90.

Murphy’s death was announced in a letter signed by the Chancellor of Makurdi Diocese, Rev. Father Jude Ortese, on behalf of the Bishop of the Diocese.

According to the announcement, he died on November 28 after a brief illness at Bishop Murray Medical Center, and the burial arrangements will be announced later.

The statement reads in part: “I write on behalf of the bishop of Makurdi Diocese, Most Revd Wilfred Anagbe, cmf to announce to you the sad news of the death of one of our elder brothers, Revd Fr Michael Murphy, CSSp. Fr. Murphy was a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (spiritans). He was born in 1932 and ordained to the priesthood in 1960. Since then, he had worked all his priesthood in Nigeria.

“He died at Bishop Murray Medical Centre, Makurdi, in the early hours of this morning, 28 November, 2022 after a brief illness.”

Before his death, the Irish priest, Revd Murphy served as Vicar General of Makurdi Diocese and Pastor of St. Dominic’s Parish, Makurdi, which was his last place of assignment.

He was known for developments, one of which was the establishment of St. Dominick’s High School in 2015–2016.

Murphy was of the Roman Catholic religious order called the Order of the Holy Ghost.
