Malam Sanusi Lamido, who was removed from his position as the Emir of Kano four years ago, has now been reinstated to the throne by Governor Abba Yusuf. The decision was announced by Yusuf on Thursday following the enactment of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024.

“With the unanimous support of the kingmakers, I have authorized the reinstatement of Malam Sanusi Lamido,” stated Abba.

This new legislation supersedes the Kano State Emirates Council Law of 2019 and dismantles the emirate councils established by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Under the legislation, Ganduje established the emirates of Karaye, Bichi, Rano, and Gaya alongside Kano in December 2019.

The former governor deposed Sanusi II following a prolonged dispute in March 2020.

Earlier on Thursday, during the plenary session, the state assembly passed the repeal into law.

Explaining the rationale behind the repeal, Deputy Speaker Muhammad Butu emphasized that restoring the single Emir in Kano would enhance the state’s stature and unity on the national stage, as the division into five emirates had diminished its capacity and dignity.

Majority Leader Lawal Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa remarked after the repeal was passed that the bill effectively annulled the establishment of the five new emirates, reinstating the historical tradition of a single Emir in Kano dating back to the Jihad of Shehu Usman Dan Fodio.

Yan Gurasa added, “The dissolved emirates only served to sow discord among the people of Kano, fracturing a unity that had endured for centuries. By reverting to our original historical structure, we affirm one Kano, one people, and one Emir.”
