The Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said the only reason why Nigerians are celebrating this year’s independence is the fact that it is the last of President Muhammadu Buhari APC led administration.
In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, said the PDP is poised to rescue the country and bring true dividends of democracy to the Nigerians.
The statement reads: “Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State joins the global human community to mark today, 1st October 2022, as the 62nd Independence Anniversary for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Our great party commemorates this special day for its significance as representing the beginning of the journey towards greatness for our dear fatherland as envisioned by our founding fathers.
“We acknowledge that along the way such hopes and dreams as were nurtured for the country have been disappointed, particularly at the level of the political leadership.
“As a political party we are mindful of both milestones in achievements and shortfalls witnessed during the period of our 16 uninterrupted years in leadership over the country.
“During that period we very significantly achieved stabilisation of civil rule and professionalism for the military, keeping them out of interference in politics.

“We also graduated participatory democracy in the country from near total dominance of the incumbent to the enviable status of peaceful transition of power from an incumbent ruling order to the opposition through the ballot.
“Our failings as a ruling order during same period may be counted in terms of breaches in internal security and economic hardships on ordinary citizens, which prompted our exit from power at the 2015 elections.
“Yet we bequeathed to our successors, the All Progressives Congress (APC) the fastest growing and one among the strongest economies in Africa, and as well successfully navigated obstacles at international levels to order for much needed armaments for the fight against insurgents on our shores.
“Today as Nigeria turns 62, citizens may only look back with nostalgia on the “good old days” under PDP, with insecurity at its horrendous worst, and the economy in such shambles they may only hope to survive on starvation rations daily.
“But we are optimistic there is the opportunity once again before the people of this potentially great nation through the ballot in 2023, to reset the political leadership over their affairs and Rescue their beloved country from incompetence, nepotism, corruption and backwardness.
“The one thing to celebrate at this occasion is the fact that this is the last Independence Anniversary Nigeria will mark under Muhammadu Buhari as President, and most likely under an APC sponsored government at the federal level.
“Back here in Benue State PDP has kept faith with the people, being it responsible for almost everything that may be counted as dividends of democracy since 1999.
“Through the very courageous stand of Governor Samuel Ortom in defence of the people against sponsored terrorism and a land grab agenda being executed by Fulani herdsmen, we have continued to thrive as a people.
“It is our unflinching faith that the covenant of Benue people with our great party, PDP, will be renewed through the ballot come 2023.”
