Nigeria’s Folashade Lawal Rafiatu has set a new Commonwealth Games record with 206KG in the Women’s 59KG event at the Commonwealth Games ongoing in Birmingham, the United Kingdom.

She finished top with a gold medal, Nigeria‘s second in the ongoing Commonwealth games.

Nigeria won its first medal on Saturday by Adijat Adenike Olarinoye

she recorded a total of 203kg in the women’s 55kg weightlifting event to win Nigeria’s first gold medal in the games.

Earlier on Sunday, a Nigerian lifter, Umoafia Edidiong won a bronze medal in the Men’s 67KG category.

He snatched 130 kg and lifted 160 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 290 kg to earn Nigeria’s second medal.

Nigeria now has two gold medals and a bronze medal in the ongoing Games.

An ecstatic Folashade responded to her success by saying that while she had worked hard to prepare for the challenge, earning a gold medal fell short of her expectations.

Team Nigeria now has three medals in total, all from weightlifting, as Folashade’s victory came only hours after Edidiong Umoafia took home the bronze in the men’s 67kg event.

Another competition saw the men’s table tennis team go to the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games by defeating Malaysia 3-2 after coming from behind.

Team Nigeria will need to defeat their Indian opponents to secure a place in the finals and ensure another medal for the nation after their incredible comeback allowed them to move to the next stage of the competition.
