Arch. Asema Achado, the member of the House of Representatives for the Gwer West/Gwer East Federal Constituency, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, by angry supporters of Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The incident occurred during the burial ceremony of the late Professor J.T. Orkar in Apir, located in the Gwer East local government area. Before Achado was called to give his speech, the Master of Ceremony announced that a group of Governor Alia’s supporters, known as “The Alia The Better,” had been assigned to retrieve the microphone from any speaker who exceeded the allotted five minutes.

When Achado began his speech, he condemned the practice of designating youths to take the microphone from speakers. Instead, he offered to review the curriculum vitae of ten of the youths in order to provide them with employment opportunities at the federal level.

As he was making this offer, members of Governor Alia’s supporters, who behaved aggressively, disrupted Achado and surrounded him while chanting songs in support of the governor. Achado, who was visibly without security personnel, managed to find a way to escape the assassination attempt.

This incident took place in the presence of Governor Hyacinth Alia, who appeared powerless to intervene or stop his supporters from attacking a federal lawmaker.

Achado attended the burial because the late Professor Orkar was a prominent elder from the Masev community, which is part of the constituency he represents in the National Assembly. Arch. Asema Achado is a notable figure who has significantly contributed to the development of his community and state prior to his recent election as a member of the House of Representatives for the Gwer East/Gwer West Federal Constituency.
