Benue Anti-grazing law: The Member of the House of Representatives for Gwer East/Gwer West Federal Constituency, Arc. (Dr.) Asema Achado, has voiced his deep concern over the ongoing attacks in the Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State, attributed to suspected Fulani militia. He laments the alarming silence from Governor Hyacinth Alia amid these violent incidents, which have left many residents in fear and despair.

Achado urges Governor Alia to explain the apparent dormancy of the Benue State Anti-Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law since the Governor took office in May 2023. He underscores that it is the government’s fundamental duty to protect its citizens and maintain law and order, emphasizing the crucial role of effective legislation in achieving these goals.

The Gwer East/Gwer West representative points out that he and other members of the Benue State Caucus at the National Assembly have sponsored various bills and motions, which have led to increased federal action and financial support from President Bola Tinubu’s administration to help combat insecurity in the state.

Achado reiterates his call for the enforcement of the Anti-Open Grazing Law, designed to provide a sustainable solution to the challenges faced by farmers due to the activities of marauding herders. He highlights that the persistent attacks have caused not only physical harm but also deep emotional and psychological trauma in affected communities, disrupting their lives and livelihoods.

“The relentless violence must end. Our farmers are the backbone of our economy, yet they live in constant fear,” Achado asserts. He urges the Benue State Government to take decisive action against these unwarranted attacks, cautioning Governor Alia that silence in the face of such adversity could be seen as complicity.

Achado extends his condolences to families who have lost loved ones to the violence and encourages the Tyoshin community and others affected to remain peaceful and resilient in these challenging times. “It is in our unity and strength that we will find hope and a path forward,” he remarks.
