The Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for Abia State, Professor Uche E. Ikonne has been declared dead.
His death was announced in a statement by his son, Dr Uche Ikonne, on Wednesday.
Ikonne died at the National Hospital, Abuja after a brief illness.
According to the announcement the Abia governorship candidate had suffered from cardiac arrest.
Meanwhile, the family has stated that burial arrangements of late Ikonne would be made public in due course.
The statement reads: “I regret to announce the death of my dear father, Prof Eleazar Uchenna Ikonne, who died at the National Hospital Abuja today January 25, 2023, by 4am after a brief illness.
“He was recovering after taking proper treatment in the United Kingdom but relapsed a few days ago leading to multiple cardiac arrests from which he didn’t recover from.

“Further details and arrangements would be made known to the public after deliberations and meetings are made within the family”.
With his death, the party’s aspirant who came second at the governorship primary would assume the position as the Abia State PDP Governorship Candidate. This is similar to the incident that happened Kogi State where Governor Yahaya Bello became the governor of the state.
