Benue: Lecturers to embark on strike over unpaid salary arrears

Speaking to Newsflow, one of the Lecturers who pleaded anonymity, said the present Benue State Governor won the 2023 election on his promise to clear the backlog of salary arrears, a promise he restated in his acceptance speech when he won the election.

The Lecturer wondered why ten months into the life of the state government no one is talking about salary arrears.

He called on the Benue governor to revisit his promises and begin to act on them except he is telling them that he used the salary arrears narrative as bait to win the election.

In a separate remark, another lecturer said this is the first of its kind that a new government has not considered payment of salary arrears of civil servants after ten months in office.

He noted that when former Benue State governors, Gabriel Suswam and Samuel Ortom assumed office they paid salary arrears and Governor Alia should do the same.

The Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, had promised to clear backlog salary arrears. In his words, the Governor in his acceptance speech as Governor-elect said “We will clear the backlog of salaries, pensions and gratuity.”
