There are different ways of telling what is in the pot with cooked food by mare looking at the way it is been covered.
In Africa, where I come from, one can by just looking at the positing of the cover of the pot of food easily explain at what level the food in the pot is, whether full, half full, half-finished or completely finished.
I found out this during my schooling periods in primary and secondary schools.
Growing up in a big family was fun because there was always food in almost half of the kitchens in the compound. The African culture is sweet I should say.
Well this was how I found out the different positions of pot covering that suggest the state of food in the pot. Interestingly, this practice is still ongoing.

This first image below tells that the food had just been cooked. The small cover opening is to allow the steam to evaporate.
This scenario is mostly found when the food is not to be eaten instantly. This allows the food to get a bit cold.
The next image of a pot below tightly covered means the content in the pot is fully intact, untouched, unserved. However, at some instances it could mean that a small portion of it has be served. Just small.
Next is a pot covering suggesting that the food in it has been “halfly” or partly dealt with. HAHAH. It suggests what is in the pot is half way gone. If you are in a big house, this is not good for you delay, because delay is dangerous. At any point you see this pot covering, fetch your own food and eat first be attending to other issues. You may not be lucky to find it this way again.
Here is the final stage of pot covering which I would never pray for a hungry man to find. Whenever you see the acrobatic or upside-down covering, it is a sign of emptiness. A sign of the pot telling you that you are unlucky with what was cooked. Sorry, you came late.
This covering means what is left to be done for the pot is washing. How can you wash what you didn’t eat? You see! The best advice is to just leave the pot to rest and find remedy for your hunger in readily available food which could be fruits and nuts or any other food.
Okay, these pot coverings I have experienced for many years. I have seen them manifest in other houses and restaurants too.
