The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, on Sunday, foiled a kidnap attempt on commuters along the Afi, Nde-Ogoja/Ikom highway.
A group of unknown gunmen had blocked the road, halting traffic in both directions when the Speaker and his convoy were returning to Ikom after attending the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Sylvester Agabi’s Thanksgiving Ceremony in Obudu ran into the scene.
Security men attached to the Speaker dispersed the miscreants and engaged in sporadic shooting to clear the road for stranded motorists, averted a potential kidnap of passengers and restored the flow of traffic on the road.

Consequently, the Speaker visited the Atimaka Trailer Park in Ikom, a hub predominantly inhabited by the Hausa and warned against the disturbance of the peace of the Nde people and travellers along the highway by any individual.
According to the statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Matthew Okache, Ayambem emphasized that if incidents of kidnapping persist decisive action would be taken to assure the safety of travellers and the people of the state.
