On Tuesday, on Tuesday, April 30th, 2024, the Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, announced that the state government will launch its new local security outfit that will consist of ten thousand youths before the end of May 2024.

Governor Alia announced during the Stakeholders Meeting of the All Progressives Congress, APC, which took place at Government House, Makurdi.

According to the Governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the launch of the State-owned security outfit will aid in securing Benue communities, enabling farmers to access their farmlands without fear.

The statement quoted the governor as saying that his administration is already working towards procuring Hilux vans and motorcycles that will be used by the security outfit to access the nooks and crannies of the state.

The security decision of the Benue State government has drawn a lot of questions begging for answers.

Many months ago, Governor Alia, while addressing pressmen at the presidential villa, announced to the world that Benue was peaceful suggesting that the killings in the state by herdsmen had gone. But with the decision to launch a new security outfit, we may easily ask the governor, is the state no longer peaceful? Or why a new security outfit in a peaceful state or is the state preparing for an impending war?

Our governor cannot be confused, he should not be by all standards but we may also ask him, with the new security outfit, does it suggest the operations of the existing local security outfits which are the Benue State Community Volunteer and Livestock Guards will be banned? But why another new security outfit when the state already has one?

Should we support the launching of the new security outfit? Would it not amount to a waste of resources when the number one citizen had certified the state peaceful?

I think Governor Alia is yet to tell Benue people what he hopes to achieve with the new state security outfit which is abundantly unnecessary.
