Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Education has said that successive governments in the state always placed high priority on quality education and academic excellence.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon Charles Chukwuemeke Emetulu, who stated this during members’ oversight visit to the University of Delta, Agbor to round off tour of MDAs and state owned higher institutions under the Committee’s mandate, restated the resolve of the 8th Delta Assembly in collaborating with Sheriff Oborevwori led administration to achieving more in that regard.
Accompanied by the Vice Chairman of the Committee, Hon Benson Obire and others, including Hon Emmanuel Sinebe, Matthew Omonade, Dafe Chukwudi and Marilyn Okowa-Daramola, the Lawmaker who represents Ndokwa West, said government was not relenting in ensuring that Deltans have access to quality education at all levels.
Emetulu commended the immediate past governor of the State, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa for his courage in establishing 3 new universities in the State which has given privilege to many average families to send their wards to school.
He noted that the three new universities were established as the Delta State University, Abraka could no longer accommodate the large number of Deltans seeking admissions to higher institutions, noting that private universities were not an alternative to many due to their high tuition fees.
The Lawmaker assured that the state government was doing everything possible to see that the new universities and other tertiary institutions in the State experience speedy infrastructural development in line with the MORE Agenda of the State government.
Hon Emetulu commended Management and Governing Council of University of Delta Agbor for maintaining high academic standards in the institution.
He said the visit has enabled members of the committee see first hand developments and challenges in the institution and appreciated government efforts and those of other stakeholders in the development of the institution.
The Lawmaker enjoined the management of UNIDEL to continue to interface with relevant stakeholders, including the State Assembly Committee on Education with a view to achieving more for the school.
Vice Chancellor of the University of Delta, Agbor, Prof Stella Chiemeke while welcoming the Lawmakers to the institution, expressed gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the State House of Assembly for their unwavering support towards the growth and development of the school.
Prof Chiemeke said the infrastructural development in the institution was as a result of the State government’s commitment towards ensuring that the nascent institution was ranked among the best in the country.

She disclosed that 74 academic programmes run by the school are set for accreditation by the Nigeria University Commission, NUC and expressed optimism that the programmes would be accredited as they have met all the requirements.
The Chairman and members of committee alongside officials of the University, later embarked on inspection of some ongoing and completed projects in the School, including the College of Medicine, block of class rooms for Basic Medical Sciences, as well as Tetfund projects housing class rooms, seminar halls and offices.
