As the immediate past Governor of Benue State and a prominent leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ortom embodies the qualities necessary to steer the party through internal crises and prepare it for future electoral challenges.
Calm in the Storm
The internal crisis within the Benue State chapter of the PDP, fueled by tensions between supporters of Senator Gabriel Suswam and those of Ortom himself, illustrates the challenges faced by political leaders. While many resort to vitriolic exchanges, Chief Ortom’s composed demeanour has been nothing short of admirable. Instead of retaliating with hostility, he has chosen a path of restraint, demonstrating that true leadership is defined not by how one reacts to provocation but by the ability to maintain focus on the bigger picture.
Ortom’s calmness has diffused potentially explosive situations within the Benue State chapter of PDP and set a tone of foreseeable unity within the party. His ability to remain level-headed amidst glaring insults on social and conventional media has resonated with the majority of PDP members in the state. The Ortom example and approach is crucial when divisions can easily escalate into irreparable rifts.

Another leader would have got angry and incensed by the torrent of insults thrown at him by supporters of Senator Suswam and perhaps responded in equal measure; but not Ortom. He took every piece of invective thrown at him calmly and continued to steer the party on the path of cohesion.

Recognizing the importance of unity, Chief Ortom in a recent press statement called for reconciliation among party factions. His appeal to both his supporters and those of Senator Suswam to “sheathe their swords” reflected a deep understanding of the dynamics at play within the PDP.
