A consumer (Name withheld) from Benue state has called on the general public to be weary of the new fake brown rice in circulation.
She noted that the fake brown rice in circulation in the markets of Makurdi town is a disguise of the real brown rice by seller to mark profit illegitimately.
She lamented that it is shocking to learn that the fake brown rice which was previously considered subpar has resurfaced in local markets under a new guise, stating that the same rice had been rejected before for its poor quality and wondered why it is now being sold as “Brown Rice” to unsuspecting consumers.
Dangers of the fake brown rice
According to sources, the fake brown rice had been deemed unfit for consumption due to its high impurity levels, including dust, stones, and chaff.
However, it appears that manufacturers have found a way to rebrand and repackage this same rice, passing it off as a premium product.
