Threat Impact: Over 5 Million WordPress Sites at Risk

An urgent warning has been released by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) reporting a security vulnerability affecting the WordPress plugin LiteSpeed Cache and designated as CVE-2024-28000.

This flaw can infect over 5 million websites worldwide, allowing malicious actors to get unauthorized administrative access with minimal effort.

Vulnerability Details: Exploiting “Role Simulation” for Admin Access on wordpress

The vulnerability originates from an insufficiency inside the plugin’s “role simulation” capability. Attackers can get complete control of a website without requiring authentication by taking advantage of this vulnerability.

Once they have access, they can employ malicious plugins, steal confidential information, or send visitors to dangerous websites. The combination of a weak hash function and inadequately safeguarded debug logs makes the vulnerability easier to attack, allowing hackers to utilize brute-force techniques to obtain access.
Websites that are vulnerable to data theft run a significant risk of having sensitive user data, such as payment and personal information, stolen by hackers.

Once more, defacement presents a risk to the site’s integrity since it allows for the introduction of malicious information or the interruption of services. Additionally, users may inadvertently land on phony websites, where they could be vulnerable to malware or phishing scams.

Due to the heavy reliance on WordPress and the LiteSpeed Cache plugin, businesses may suffer significant financial losses as well as long-term harm to their reputations as a result of this security vulnerability.

Because of this, NITDA strongly advises any WordPress site administrators who are utilizing the LiteSpeed Cache plugin to take quick action to safeguard their digital assets.

NITDA advises website administrators to update the LiteSpeed Cache plugin to the most recent version (6.4.1) as soon as possible in order to lessen the hazard. Through the “Plugins” area of their WordPress dashboard, users can confirm and carry out this upgrade.

Disabling debugging on live websites is also crucial because this function may unintentionally reveal private logs that hackers might use against you.

Steps to Mitigate the Vulnerability on WordPress

In order to find and fix any vulnerabilities, NITDA also advises website owners to regularly check the settings and configurations of their plugins. According to the organization, “regular checks for plugin updates and security flaws are essential to safeguarding against cyber threats.”

Although the LiteSpeed Cache plugin is intended to improve website performance through resource and content caching, its history of vulnerabilities highlights the significance of maintaining software updates.

Prior vulnerabilities that allowed attackers to elevate their user rights and create new administrator accounts were cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities and unauthenticated privilege escalations.
